Administers routine first aid and assists in screening ill or injured students in accordance with State laws and District regulations. Assists with health testing programs and other health-related services as needed which may include, but are not limited to: urinary catheterization, gastric tube feedings, toileting, diaper changing, tracheotomy care, etc. Training will be provided for these tasks by the school nurse or other qualified health professional(s). NATURE AND SCOPE Under direct supervision of school nurse, performs clerical and limited technical duties to provide health care to ill or injured students by performing a variety of tasks that are governed by well-established policies, procedures, and regulations. Incumbent exercises some independent judgment when applying specific instructions and established methods in routine or emergency situations. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is an entry-level health care assistant position. Advancement along the health care track would require formal education and certification as an LVN or Nurse. Incumbents may seek advancement along the clerical track to school office or secretarial positions. ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples) "h Performs routine first aid procedures and assists in screening ill or injured children according to established procedures. Refers serious illnesses and injuries to school nurse, administrator or other health care provider. May provide emergency short term care to students with asthma, diabetes or other situations requiring immediate care "h Reviews student records for proper immunizations. Alerts parents of needed immunizations and maintains communication until records of immunization are provided. "h Maintains a variety of health-related records and files. "h Assists with the preparation and arrangements for health testing programs performed by the school nurse. Records student test results. Schedules follow-up appointments if further testing is required. "h Performs a variety of routine clerical duties. Types a variety of reports, correspondence, forms, notices and referrals including PE excuses and accident reports. Maintains files and duplicates materials as needed. "h Prepares, distributes and maintains First Aid Kits for school classrooms. Maintains First Aid supplies in the Nurse????s Office. Disinfects and sterilizes equipment. "h Maintains an accurate list of students exempted from the Physical Education program. "h Provides emotional support for students until qualified professional can respond. Qualified health professional could include school nurse, psychologist or a school site administrator. "h Provides information and assistance to students, parents and others as requested. "h Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge and Skills: Requires knowledge of medical terminology and basic first aid and CPR practices. Incumbent must be familiar with State Health Codes, State Education Code and District policies, procedures and practices. Requires basic clerical and record keeping skills. Sufficient communication skills sufficient to deal with stressful situations. Abilities: Requires the ability to assess situations and apply applicable regulations and procedures when administering first aid or health care assistance. Incumbent must be able to determine severity of illness or injury and refer for the appropriate level of care. Requires the ability to remain calm and patient while carrying out duties. Must exercise patience in communications with students, parents, nurse and other staff. Must be able to perform all clerical, office and record keeping duties required of the position. Incumbents are subject to exposure to communicable or infectious diseases. Physical Abilities: Requires good arm, hand, finger dexterity in order to operate keyboard, typewriter and other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words, numbers and prescription labels. Requires speaking and hearing to communicate in person or over the phone. Education and Experience: The position typically requires a High School diploma supplemented by course work in general office skills. Minimum of one year health care or clerical office experience involving contact with children required. Licenses or Certifications: Current CPR and First Aid certifications required.
