Summary : American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Inyo National Forest, is seeking two Visitor Information Services Assistants. The VIS Assistant should possess a passion for public land management and a professional interest in advancing their career towards natural resource management or public services. The US Forest Service, Inyo National Forest, has a need for the following critical work activities to be completed by qualified on-site personnel. Work on this project requires a recreation and/or natural resource background and experience with various skills unique to a visitor center setting. Visitor Services supports all program areas in the Forest Service. Oftentimes it is the only Forest Service representative a visitor encounters on their vacation. It is the general point-of-contact for all Forest Service related and local questions. This position issues wilderness permits, assists with maintaining facilities, reports violations, educates about fires, learns about local plants and animals and more. This position gives a front-line experience for careers in outdoor recreation and a broad understanding of the federal government's role in managing public land. In Mammoth Lakes, this position helps manage the Minaret Vista, the entrance to a popular recreation area, and issues wilderness permits from the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center. They work closely with multiple partners to provide the best service possible while still prioritizing safety and protecting the land. They answer general visitor questions, help plan trips, and direct visitors to the appropriate resources. Mammoth Lakes is a fast-paced, busy destination in the summer, with many recreation opportunities ranging from camping, fishing, wilderness travel, mountain biking, hiking and climbing. It is access to Devils Postpile National Monument, and close to the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park. It is also located near Mono Lake, a special designated location with unique features and an important bird site. Staff are encouraged to learn more about the area to enhance their knowledge, and opportunities exist for field days or to shadow specialists. Start Date: April 25th End Date: October 9th The Inyo National Forest is a large, complex forest, encompassing about two million acres in California and Nevada. It contains several natural features of national and international interest. There are nine wilderness areas and six research natural areas, as well as the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, and Mt. Whitney the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. Diverse geologic features, combined with the elevational extremes and attendant wide range of climatic conditions, results in tremendous floristic diversity on the Forest, with vegetation communities ranging from desert scrub, sagebrush scrub, and pinyon woodland, to Jeffrey pine, lodgepole pine, and alpine habitats. Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are both premier locations for outdoor recreation in California. These opportunities include backpacking, fishing, hunting, hang gliding, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, cycling, mountain biking, photography, rock climbing, trail running, off-highway vehicle exploration, and horseback riding. Living Allowance: The member should anticipate serving 40 hrs/wk with potential for holidays and weekends. The Member will receive a living allowance of $575/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly. Housing: Housing may be provided in Forest Service barracks at no cost to the member. Specific Tasks Include: Provides excellent customer service by answering questions, greeting and assisting visitors Works closely with recreation staff, seasonal and permanent staff to provide current and accurate information Informs visitors of rules and regulations, safety risks and recreational opportunities Evaluates public inquiries in order to provide the most useful and appropriate information or to suggest other options or redirect caller to the appropriate District staff Assists with tracking visitor use Responds to radio traffic in support of District personnel Performs administrative work including computer programs, paperwork, answering phones, as well as general cleaning and organization duties Issues wilderness permits and educate on safety and regulations Collects fees at a remote site while managing road safety and educating on resource protection Staff are encouraged to learn more about the area to enhance their knowledge. The position includes opportunities for field days or to shadow specialists. Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications: This position requires the balancing of critical thinking with customer service expertise, along with the ability to work directly with the public in sometimes difficult scenarios. Required: Must have cash handling experience Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request) Ability to pass a federal criminal background check ACE is a drug free workplace and reserves the right to drug test at any time Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals. Must have strong oral and written communication skills Must be able to take initiative and work independently, as well as participate effectively in collaborative efforts Must be comfortable in an indoor and outdoor work environment The member must be willing to represent ACE and the Forest Service in a professional, positive and enthusiastic manner.
