Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Animal Services:
Performs animal control functions (animal regulations enforcement;
animal care and adoption; licensing; capture and release of wild
animals); and performs related work as required.
Incumbent may work with immediate supervision or independently
and may be on call during off-duty hours for emergency situations.
Positions in this class perform work which is structured, seldom
varies, and is performed in accordance with established
instructions, methods, and procedures. Incumbents receive thorough
instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training
are expected to perform duties without constant supervision.

matters which do not conform to established instruction, policy, or
Examples of Duties:
Conduct a wide variety of animal control and shelter operation
duties; investigate and enforce state and local animal regulations;
issue citations; investigate animal bites, nuisances, barking, and
cruelty complaints; clean, euthanize, and feed animals; file,
answer phones, and write reports; observe safety regulations and
safe work practices particularly in the handling of animals and the
operation of vehicles; investigate and report complaints or
situations involving animals; draft bite reports for transmission
to the County Health Department; inventory and order supplies; make
court reports and appears in court as necessary; receive and
dispatch calls; answer questions and provide services to the
public; maintain and clean the shelter kennels and buildings
(scrubbing walls, sinks, toilets and picking up animal feces);
participate in the public relation activities of the division;
operate city vehicles; keep accurate records; and perform related
work as required.
* Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to:
* Education equivalent to graduation from high school, attending
college, or planning
to attend college.
* A minimum of one (1) year of experience working with animals
and/or one (1) year as a
member of Future Farmers of America (FFA), or another organized
youth program that
requires consistent attendance, commitment, and active
* College level course work in animal science or a closely

Selection shall be made from those applicants who submit a complete

City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete

medical examination, and a drug/alcohol screen. Possession of a
valid California driver's license and good driving record will be
required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work
